Facebook Twitter Google+LinkedInPinterestWhatsAppDominica, September 25, 2017 – Roseau- Residents in Dominica are describing horrific conditions on the island in the wake of the catastrophic Hurricane Maria. Many people have taken to social media to complain about the state of the island.“Right now I see one of three things happening 1. Getting killed by looters 2. Starving to death! 3. Dying for lack of medical care”, one resident shared on her Facebook page.Barbadian economist, Jeremy Stephen, was one of several foreign nationals evacuated on Friday by the Barbados Defence Force. He posted an impassioned video to Facebook this morning as he described a country in “crisis mode”.Stephen said, “A lot of people will be left to starve to death, basically. I had to leave Dominica with that reality in mind.” He said he is concerned about public health as clean drinking water and food is scarce and distribution of relief items was trickling out of Roseau to surrounding areas. The OECS Bar Association is also concerned about what is happening in Dominica, especially the reports of looting.Widespread looting has been reported on the island following the catastrophic category 5 hurricane which left 15 people dead and more than 20 missing.“We have heard of all the reports of looting happening and I know members of the St Lucia Defence Force have gone up to augment the forces there from the Regional Security System already, so we are helping in that respect,” President of the Association Thaddeus Antoine said.“As lawyers, we are going to help as best as we can in the situation.” McAlpine defends views on Dominica, says he is simply representing the views of his constituents Recommended for you He said the association had started a storm fund to aid members who were affected by Hurricane Irma in Anguilla, the British Virgin Island and Barbuda.“In case of the Bar Association of the Caribbean, we have asked them to be in solidarity with [us]. Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn ReddIt Email,(RNS) — For the Rev. Kaji Douša, senior pastor of Park Avenue Christian Church in New York, crossing the U.S.-Mexico border is a fairly uneventful activity. A former San Diego resident, she had passed through the U.S. Customs and Border Protection checkpoints many times in the past without incident. But in early January, as she crossed going north from Tijuana back to the United States, something was different.Douša was returning from participating in a 40-day “Sanctuary Caravan” designed to offer aid to Central American asylum-seekers participating in the migrant caravan. The campaign was organized by the New York City-based New Sanctuary Coalition, a faith-based immigrant rights group co-chaired by Douša, a veteran immigrant rights advocate. But as she attempted to walk across the San Ysidro port of entry on Jan. 2, Douša said, she was unexpectedly detained for a “secondary inspection” by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers. She described to Religion News Service being escorted into a room, where she was met by two men who wore uniforms different from other CBP officers. Then, she said, they proceeded to pepper her with questions for at least an hour and a half.Douša, who regularly appears on MSNBC to discuss immigration issues, said the officials not only “interrogated” her about the specifics of her trip to Mexico, but also about her faith-based coalition and why she spent her time advocating for immigrants. Her response, she said, was a spiritual one: “Because my faith compels me — you do remember Jesus was a refugee? My sense is that when we deport someone made in the image of God, we’re deporting Jesus.”A Honduran girl walks with her mother through the streets of Tijuana, where they have been staying while trying to get asylum in the U.S. RNS photo by Jair Cabrera TorresShe was eventually released and able to return home, but reports of recently leaked internal Department of Homeland Security documents suggest that the intense questioning Douša was subjected to is part of an effort by the U.S. government to track and scrutinize immigrant rights activists — including, it seems, faith-based leaders such as Douša and the group she helps lead.In documents obtained by a San Diego NBC affiliate and published on its website on March 6, Douša’s name and photo appear with a yellow “X” across her face, indicating that her visa or SENTRI pass — SENTRI stands for Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection, a system that allows for expedited screening along the Southwest U.S.-Mexico border — has been revoked. The documents showed Douša and several others listed in a secret government database of activists, journalists and lawyers that is allegedly used by agents of CBP, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the U.S. Border Patrol, Homeland Security Investigations and agents from the San Diego sector of the FBI, according to NBC.The documents were originally published with many names and faces blurred out. Douša said that when an NBC reporter confirmed to her that she was on the list, she was appalled.“I broke into tears,” she said. “I was so devastated to see myself in my government’s crosshairs.”Douša said she is also concerned her Global Entry status, which allows for expedited screening at other ports of entry and is often connected to the SENTRI program, may also have been revoked. She fears too that her ability to travel to Mexico is “in question” given that others on the list have been denied entry into the country. The Rev. Kaji Douša as she appears in an alleged government database. According to documents leaked to NBC, the yellow “X” indicates her SENTRI status has been revoked. Via Kaji DoušaAsked to confirm the leak and Douša’s account, Andrew Meehan, assistant commissioner of public affairs at CBP, responded with a statement that did not directly refer to Douša or deny the authenticity of the documents uncovered by NBC. It said the agency “initiated an inquiry in February” to address “assaults against Border Patrol Agents” in November 2018 — the same month when tensions at the border rose to the point where border agents teargassed people seeking entry into the United States.“In response to recent incidents in November 2018 and January of this year, which included assaults against Border Patrol Agents, CBP identified individuals who may have information relating to the instigators and/or organizers of these attacks,” the statement read in part. “Efforts to gather this type of information are a standard law enforcement practice.”Asked if she had been questioned about anything in line with the CBP’s statement, Douša, who said she was not at the border during the November confrontation, offered a one-word response: “Never.”Douša said the revelations are frustrating because she has not been accused of any crimes.“I know that I’m being targeted and intimidated because of my outspoken role as someone who is going to stand up for the most vulnerable people in the world,” she said. “That doesn’t feel good.”Douša’s denomination, the United Church of Christ, also issued a strongly worded rebuke of the government’s alleged tracking policies.“We emphatically call upon our nation’s leaders to immediately cease such abusive assertions of political power for the sole purpose of intimidation based in fear mongering,” the statement read in part. “We implore you to return to Rev. Kaji Dousa full access to the rights afforded her as a citizen of the United States and honor the liberties granted her, through the First Amendment of the United States Constitution, to practice the tenets of her faith without persecution. We will not capitulate to the fear tactics and abuse of political power represented by these outrageous acts of harassment that target humanitarian efforts at our southern borders.”The incident is not the first time the New Sanctuary Coalition has challenged immigration officials. In February 2018, the New Sanctuary Coalition, which is based at Judson Memorial Church in New York, and its executive director, Ravi Ragbir, filed a lawsuit with other groups alleging that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency targets prominent immigrant rights advocates for surveillance, arrest and deportation — a tactic they argue is a violation of their First Amendment rights.Ragbir, who is from Trinidad and Tobago, alleges in the suit that officials have targeted him for deportation because of his activism. He told RNS that the reports by NBC and others support his case, and that the government’s actions are an affront to freedom of speech and freedom of religion. “It confirms what the lawsuit alleges,” he said via email. The case is pending in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. The same day that the NBC story was published, a separate article in The Nation uncovered evidence via a Freedom of Information Act request that New Sanctuary Coalition is one of several groups that ICE has been tracking in New York City.Demonstrations affiliated with the New Sanctuary Coalition showed up on an “Anti-Trump Protest” spreadsheet distributed on July 31, 2018, by officials in Homeland Security Investigations, ICE’s investigative arm. It documented the names of the protests in New York City and the number of people who had signed up on Facebook to attend. (Douša noted that the coalition also operated under President Obama, years before Donald Trump was elected president.)Other faith-based advocates have challenged the government’s immigration policies in recent years, with many descending on the border over the past few months. In December, at least 30 faith leaders were arrested on a beach near San Diego as they protested what they described as the unjust treatment of asylum-seekers. Some faith leaders were dragged onto the sand by officers as they were detained as others knelt to pray in the waves. Those efforts follow years of confrontations between immigration officials and supporters of the New Sanctuary Movement, in which houses of worship allow immigrants at risk of deportation to take up residence in their buildings. ICE has a policy of not raiding “sensitive locations” such as schools and churches but has still faced off with faith leaders: In November, 27 people were arrested when a North Carolina pastor and members of his church surrounded an ICE van to prevent the arrest of a man at risk of deportation. As for Douša, she said she is not “stepping back” from her advocacy. She is considering taking legal action and has been in contact with members of Congress, including several in the Congressional Black Caucus.Douša said she has concerns about the effect of the border clashes on immigration officials as well. At the border, she asked her questioners about their own faith, and both identified as Christian. She said the conversation then became “less structured,” and she argued that they are “being asked (to implement) terrible policy,” that may be more than what they “signed up” for.The next day, Douša returned with another pastor and a film crew in tow, hoping to speak with the agents again to finish the conversation, but was unsuccessful. Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn ReddIt Email,FORT WORTH, Texas (RNS) — Stained glass is fragile. So, too, are the fortunes of a stained glass artist.Don Young and his wife, Debora, were reminded of that lesson last month with the abrupt cancellation of a lucrative, once-in-a-lifetime commission to produce a series of stained glass windows for the J.W. MacGorman Chapel and Performing Arts Center on the campus of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. The project, launched in 2013, was to take a dozen years or more and could have brought the Youngs, who run a small studio out of their Fort Worth home, as much as $2 million in income.Debora and Don Young in Fort Worth, Texas. RNS photo by Bruce Tomaso“In our line of work, a job like that — oh, my God, it just doesn’t happen,” Don Young said in an interview with Religion News Service.“It was like a dream. And then, just like that, we went from a dream job with a regular paycheck to nothing.”The windows, more than 60 in all, were to honor titans of the conservative resurgence within the Southern Baptist Convention. That movement began in the late 1970s with the stated goal of reversing what its proponents perceived as a liberal drift away from an unbending, unambiguous adherence to biblical inerrancy. One tenet of the conservative movement is that the Bible prescribes separate roles for men and women, precluding the latter from several functions of ministry. Another is that science can never override the supreme truth of Scripture — on, for example, such matters as creation. In early April, the seminary’s board of trustees announced that it was removing the 32 windows that the Youngs had already completed, “in the best interest of the institution.”Southwestern Baptist offered no further explanation for the decision. A seminary spokesman, after initially saying he would respond to a written request from RNS for comment, did not do so.Paul Pressler, right, in a stained glass window that has been removed from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Photo courtesy of Don Young Glass StudioOne of the windows paid homage to Paige Patterson, the longtime president of Southwestern Baptist who was fired last year.A June 1, 2018, written statement from Kevin Ueckert, chairman of Southwestern’s board of trustees, said the board unanimously concluded that Patterson ignored or mishandled female students’ complaints of sexual assault, both at the Fort Worth seminary and at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C., where Patterson had previously served as president.Patterson has steadfastly declined to comment on his firing or on the allegations that the trustees said compelled it.Another of the Youngs’ windows depicted Paul Pressler, a Southern Baptist leader from Houston who became the subject of a 2017 lawsuit alleging decades of sexual abuse. Pressler denied the allegations of abuse in court filings. Those abuse claims against Pressler, a former Texas legislator and state appellate judge, were dismissed last November.Frank Page, a former SBC leader depicted in a window, resigned last year after admitting to improper conduct.Southwestern Baptist said it would “safely store” the windows until it figured out what to do with them.On Friday, Jerry Falwell Jr., the president of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., announced that he’d brought two of the windows — one depicting his father, the late Jerry Falwell, Liberty’s founder — to the university, where they’ll be displayed in the Jerry Falwell Museum.President Jerry Falwell Jr. has stained glass windows from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary unveiled at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va. Video screenshot from Liberty UniversityFalwell, speaking at Liberty’s baccalaureate service, took the opportunity to rebuke what he called “a new regime” within the Southern Baptist Convention that’s turning away from “the high view of Scripture” advanced by his father and others.“We will continue to honor the conservative leaders who reformed the Southern Baptist Convention,” he told the graduating Liberty students, “and we place our hope in your generation to be the ones to step up and provide better leadership for the future.”The stained glass project was conceived and organized six years ago by Dorothy Patterson, the wife of Paige Patterson. She led efforts to privately raise money to pay for the windows.“My dream,” she told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in December 2013, “was to portray the 20-year history of the conservative resurgence of the Southern Baptist church.”A stained glass window of Paige and Dorothy Patterson from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Photo courtesy of Don Young Glass StudioBut Dorothy Patterson’s dream was not shared by the seminary’s trustees, said Debora Young.“It was Dorothy’s pet,” she said. “The trustees were never really in favor of it. But Dorothy wanted it done, so everyone just sort of went along with it.”Paige and Dorothy Patterson (along with their black Labrador) were the subjects of one of the windows installed by the Youngs.Other Baptist luminaries immortalized in etched and colored glass included Rick Warren, O.S. Hawkins, W.A. Criswell, Jimmy Draper, Jerry Vines and Richard Land.Paige Patterson, a former president of the Southern Baptist Convention and the Fort Worth seminary’s forceful president for 15 years, was a leading architect of the conservative resurgence. At a Southwestern chapel service in 2015, he said he recalled a time in the late 1970s when just 16 professors in Southern Baptist seminaries believed in biblical inerrancy.“Now,” he proudly added, “just a few years later, you can go to any one of our six theological seminaries, and you will not find one single professor who does not believe in the inerrancy and the infallibility of God’s Word. That is a phenomenal act of God.”Stained glass pieces are arranged in the Don Young Glass Studio while creating a window for Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Photo courtesy of Don Young Glass StudioDon Young, a Texas native, said he was raised as a Baptist but that neither he nor his wife is an adherent to the church.“We’re spiritual,” the 67-year-old artist said, “but I’d describe our religion as ‘bohemian.’”The Youngs had planned to complete “about three dozen” windows before the project was cancelled. Don Young said no one from Southwestern told him or Debora that the windows were coming down. They learned about it after the fact from an online news story.“We were taken totally by surprise. No one from there has contacted us about the removal — including Mrs. Patterson,” he said.“When people ask me if I’m sorry about what happened, I tell them, ‘Honestly, I’m sorry about the money.’ We have no complaints. We did really well for these past few years. We made enough to pay off our house 10 years early.“But we were counting on working on this for several years more. That was going to be our retirement.” read more
Illustration of the proposed graphene flake device in an applied magnetic field B, which forms a (0+1)-dimensional system equivalent to a black hole in (1+1)-dimensional spacetime. Credit: Chen et al. ©2018 American Physical Society More information: Anffany Chen et al. “Quantum Holography in a Graphene Flake with an Irregular Boundary.” Physical Review Letters. DOI: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.121.036403Also at arXiv:1802.00802 [cond-mat.str-el] The physicists, Anffany Chen and coauthors from institutions in Canada, Israel, the UK, and the US, have published a paper on the graphene quantum hologram in a recent issue of Physical Review Letters.”We show that a rather ubiquitous and well-studied material—graphene—can behave in novel and exciting ways under certain conditions,” coauthor Marcel Franz, a physics professor at the University of British Columbia, told Phys.org. “Specifically, the electrons in a nanoscale-sized flake of graphene with an irregular boundary and in an applied magnetic field could realize the so-called Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model.”As the physicists explain, the SYK model illustrates a type of “holographic duality,” in which a higher-dimensional system (here, a black hole in (1+1)-dimensional spacetime) can be represented by a lower-dimensional system (in this case, the electrons in graphene, which occupy a (0+1)-dimensional spacetime). The type of holographic duality illustrated by the SYK model is particularly interesting because it exhibits some of the signature properties of black holes, such as non-zero residual entropy and quantum chaos propagation. It may also help answer fundamental questions about the connection between quantum mechanics and gravity. “The SYK model is of great interest to physicists today because it is believed to contain a holographic description of a quantum black hole,” Franz said. “Some of the most enigmatic mysteries in modern physics lie at the interface between Einstein’s general relativity (a theory describing spacetime, gravity and black holes) and quantum mechanics (a theory describing microscopic phenomena, electrons, atoms, etc). A better understanding of the SYK model could therefore shed light on these fundamental questions.”Unlike other systems that have been proposed to demonstrate the SYK model, the new quantum phase of graphene does not require any advanced fabrication techniques and should be realizable using existing technology. The main requirements are that the graphene flake have a highly irregular boundary and a clean interior so that the electron wave functions have a random spatial structure, which provides the necessary conditions for realizing the hologram of a black hole.”We are currently working on understanding the transport properties of the graphene flake in the SYK regime,” Franz said. “More generally, we are hoping that our theoretical results will motivate experimentalists to study graphene flakes of the type required to produce the SYK physics, and we are ready to provide theoretical support to any such efforts.” Physicists have theoretically shown that, by applying a magnetic field to a small, irregularly shaped graphene flake, the flake becomes a quantum hologram of a black hole. This means that the graphene flake recreates the spatial structure and characteristic properties of a black hole, but in a much smaller, lower-dimensional system. You will use Cortana, Microsoft says by Martin Brinkmann on July 26, 2016 in Windows – Last Update: April 16, 2018 – 110 commentsSurprise, surprise. If things remain as they are, Windows 10 users who upgrade to the Anniversary Update won’t be able to turn off Cortana anymore using the Cortana settings. If you compare the start menu settings of Cortana of the current version of Windows (version 1511) with those of the Anniversary Update (version 1607) you will notice that Cortana’s off switch is no longer available (thanks Ian Paul @ PC World for spotting that)Cortana, the digital assistant that Microsoft touts as one of the major features of Windows 10 supports interaction via touch, typing, ink and voice.Microsoft integrated Cortana deeply with the native search functionality of Windows 10. While linked to search, Windows 10 users may turn off Cortana currently to use search without it. While you might have to turn off web searches on Windows 10 as well, doing so ensured that you got search functionality that matched those of previous versions of Windows.Windows users who turned off Cortana had two main reasons for it: either they did not need Cortana functionality, or they did not want it because of privacy implications.Windows 10 version 1511 vs 1607The screenshot above shows the off switch that is currently available if you run version 1511 of Windows 10 or previous versions of the operating system. You may turn off Cortana directly using the menu, or use the Group Policy Editor for that instead.Do the following to open the Cortana settings:Tap on the Windows-key and start to type.Click on the preferences icon on the left to open the settings. There you find options to turn off Cortana, turn off online search and device history search.Microsoft changed the settings in the Anniversary Update. You access them in exactly the same way as before, but will notice that they are completely different to before. You find options to disable “Hey Cortana”, Cortana on the Lock Screen, disable Cortana taskbar tidbits, disable sending notifications between devices, disable history view, disable my device history, and select the language you want Cortana to use.Windows 10 KB3176495 (August 2016 update)Microsoft changed things around again. You will notice changes made to Cortana settings after you install the KB3176495 update released August 2016.While Microsoft did not re-introduce the option to turn off Cortana completely using the interface, it lets you disable online and web result searches now there.Windows 10 Fall Creators UpdateAnd Microsoft did change things around again. Basically, the only option left is to turn off Cortana using the methods described below.Does that mean that you cannot turn of Cortana anymore? It is still possible to turn off Cortana, but not by using the preferences. The policy to disable Cortana is still available and you may use it to turn off Cortana on the device. Please note that the Group Policy Editor is only available in professional versions of Windows 10. Most notably, it is not available in Windows 10 Home. Check out this guide to find out which version of Windows is installed on a computer. Skip the next paragraph and go to the Registry option instead as it will work on Home devices as well.Tap on the Windows-key, type gpedit.msc and hit enter.Use the left folder hierarchy to go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Search.Locate Allow Cortana and double-click on it to open the policy.Set it to disabled to turn off Cortana. You can undo the change at any time by repeating the process outlined above. Set Allow Cortana either to “not configured” or “enabled” to reset the preference to its original value and turn on Cortana again.Disable Cortana by editing the RegistryIf you cannot or won’t use the Group Policy option to disable Cortana, you may use the Registry instead to do so.Tap on the Windows-key, type regedit.exe and hit enter.Confirm the UAC prompt that is displayed.Go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows SearchIf AllowCortana exists already, jump to step 7.Right-click on Windows Search and select New > Dword (32-bit) Value.Name it AllowCortana.Double-click on AllowCortana and set its value to 0 to disable the feature.Closing WordsWhile it is still possible to turn off Cortana on devices running Windows 10’s Anniversary Update, it is less obvious how to do so.SummaryArticle NameYou will use Cortana, Microsoft saysDescriptionSurprise, surprise. Hong) Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Will Fitz give it one more go?There is no doubt Larry Fitzgerald can still play at a high level after he led the Cardinals with 107 receptions for 1,023 yards and six touchdowns. In fact, his 107 catches were the most in the entire NFL. With 13 NFL seasons under his belt, however, Fitzgerald has admitted to considering retirement, but said any decision will likely wait until at least Feb. 1, when his body is fully recovered from the season. Cardinals coach Bruce Arians says he has his fingers crossed Fitzgerald will return for season No. 14, but noted there is nothing he can do to be a part of the future Hall of Famer’s decision. As for what his gut is telling him about Fitz? “I have never been in this situation so I really don’t have a gut feeling about it,” Arians said.Is the QBOF out there? If your impression of the 2016 Cardinals is that they failed because of quarterback play, your impression is incorrect. Carson Palmer, while not necessarily at the level he displayed in 2015, was quite good for Arizona, throwing for 4,233 yards with 26 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 15 games. He was very effective in the second half of the season, and showed that at 37 years of age he still has something left in the tank. However, at some point the team needs to find a young option for the position, and that’s something Arians said he hopes to accomplish over the next few months. “That will be one of our main objectives in the offseason is to make sure the franchise isn’t in the situation it was after Kurt (Warner), that the next guy is here and ready to roll.” With the 13th overall pick in a draft that so far appears light on franchise signal callers, that may be a tougher task than hoped. 0 Comments Share Top Stories Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and selling Can special teams get better? It would be foolish to try and point to one reason for why the Cardinals, at one time Super Bowl favorites, failed to reach the playoffs. But if you had to look somewhere, special teams would be a good place to start. Injuries robbed the group of its depth, and then missed field goals, blocked field goals, bad snaps and blocked punts contributed to the team’s disappointing campaign, and though moves were made during the season to try and address the issues (Aaron Brewer in at long snapper in place of Kameron Canaday, Matt Wile at punter over Drew Butler), it’s fair to say very little of this group enters the offseason with much certainty. Even kicker Chandler Catanzaro, who finished the season fairly strong, is no sure thing. A free agent, Arians said Catanzaro is a talented player but is unsure if he will be back. If he does come back for year four, however, the coach would like to see more consistency. “When looking at kickers, the great ones I’ve been around, Nick Lowery and Phil Dawson, all those guys, they had really struggled early,” Arians said. “Most kickers do, but then they hit a spell where it’s automatic.” Will a solid offensive line be built?Rare has been the season where the Cardinals had a great offensive line, though the 2016 group had potential to be. Unfortunately, injuries limited veteran guard Evan Mathis to just four games, left tackle Jared Veldheer to eight and right tackle D.J. Humphries to 13. Of the Cardinals’ linemen, only center A.Q. Shipley started all 16 games, while left guard Mike Iupati was around for 15. Due to injuries, Earl Watford, John Wetzel, Evan Boehm, Taylor Boggs and Ulrick John all saw action, with Boehm seemingly doing the most to impress. For next season, Veldheer and Humphries will be back, though who plays at which tackle spot has yet to be determined, while Iupati shouldn’t be going anywhere. Shipley and Watford are free agents, however, and of the other players, only Boehm seems to have gained an inside track on a role for next season, either at center or possibly guard. Is Calais Campbell not yet finished in Arizona? The Cardinals have many free agents to worry about, but none of have been with the team as long as Calais Campbell. The defensive lineman was a rookie on Arizona’s Super Bowl XLIII team, and has been a mainstay in the lineup since his second NFL season. A team leader, it was widely expected that 2016 would be his final season with the Cardinals, but an 8-sack campaign in which, down the stretch, he was one of the most dominant defensive linemen in the NFL, may have some rethinking his value. “I thought it was very solid, one of his better ones,” Arians said of Campbell’s campaign. “Especially the last half of the season. I thought he really benefited from Chandler (Jones) and Markus (Golden).” Add in rookie Robert Nkemdiche’s struggles to make an impact, and the Cardinals may see it fit to bring No. 93 back into the fold. The question, as it always is, comes down to how much the 30-year-old is seeking for his last big-money contract and just how much the Cardinals, who have other needs to fill and free agents to sign, are willing to send his way. Now that the Arizona Cardinals’ season has officially ended, everyone can truly turn their attention to the 2017 season.Unlike last year, however, when the Cardinals went into the offseason with few apparent holes to fill or issues to solve, this time around question marks abound for a team that finished a disappointing 7-8-1.In this edition of “The 5,” we’ll take a look at some of the biggest questions facing the team as it heads into one of its murkiest offseasons in recent memory. read more

The health ministry and the trade unions of healthcare professionals are close to a deal on most labour matters relating to the national health system (Gesy) and the two government bills introducing universal healthcare will be brought to the plenum next month after months of haggling, minister Giorgos Pamboridis said on Thursday.Speaking after a House health committee session, the minister said “95 per cent” of issues have been agreed with the unions, as a result of intensive efforts over the last two weeks.“With everyone’s help we have come close to a deal,” he said.“Today, the committee was briefed on the changes and convergences that have been achieved.”The committee agreed to conclude discussion of the two bills in next week’s session so they can be forwarded to the plenum for voting.Trade union reps concurred that negotiation over the last two weeks helped bridge the gaps between the two sides, but insisted that the minister’s pledges must be presented to them “on paper”.Earlier, Pamboridis had said that despite a daily smear campaign aimed at discrediting the proposed Gesy as a viable universal-coverage health system, the public should not be intimidated.Speaking on state radio on Thursday morning, Pamboridis said he fully understands the effort to terrify people, but expressed confidence that Gesy “will be introduced”.“There is, indeed, a daily effort to discredit Gesy,” he said.“Some speak of economic destruction. And I get it – I understand the effort to terrify people. I anticipated it. I ask people to not buy it. All the planning is done, and the only thing keeping free healthcare from the people is delay by political parties.”Government bills aiming to lay the legislative groundwork for the introduction of Gesy have been submitted to parliament last October, but endless discussion has left them bogged down at House Health committee-level.“I don’t think attempts to scupper the Gesy effort come from political parties, but from organised interest groups trying to lobby political parties,” Pamboridis explained.“But my appeal is to the political parties, not the interest groups. Let us complete the consensus achieved last summer between the party leaders and the President. I appeal to them to not get carried away by private interests. We are literally on the cusp.”Commenting on rumours of second thoughts by various political parties, all of which had committed to a timeline for introduction of the “single largest reform in the history of the Republic of Cyprus” last summer, Pamboridis said parties are free to voice them publicly.“If there are other thoughts, we are already on the pitch and people are watching – anyone is free to air them and be judged for them,” he said.“For my part, I will accept no derogation from the principle of universal coverage. It is the single most important pillar of a national health plan. It is the reason this whole effort was started. Anyone talking about systems excluding even one citizen is talking about departing from the agreed principles.”Meanwhile, remarking on his official visit to Malta, where he signed, on behalf of Cyprus, the declaration of a six-country group – Cyprus, Greece, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and Malta – aiming to work for cheaper drugs through collective bargaining with pharmaceutical companies, Pamboridis said the effort went better than expected.“It is not just the Southern European Union countries that form the Valetta Group, as it has come to be called,” he said.“This isn’t a problem that concerns Cyprus alone. It concerns every country, particularly, of course, small economies that are forced to negotiate with pharmaceutical giants with revenues larger than their GDP.”Ireland and Romania also joined the club, as did Slovakia, the minister said, while Belgium has expressed intention to participate.“Big pharmaceuticals are among the most powerful forces in the world – perhaps second only to the arms industry,” he said.“The only way to conduct a meaningful negotiation with them is to create a united front.”Banding together, Pamboridis said of EU countries, will “allow us, first of all, to share information”.“At what price does, say, Germany buy drugs? This is the sort of information that has never been available to us.”“Also, of course, we can then move to joint purchases, from a stronger negotiating position.”You May LikePopularEverythingColorado Mom Adopted Two Children, Months Later She Learned Who They Really ArePopularEverythingUndoSecurity SaversWindows Users Advised To Do This TodaySecurity SaversUndoPlarium I Vikings: Free Online GamePlay this for 1 minute and see why everyone is addictedPlarium I Vikings: Free Online GameUndo Concern over falling tourism numbersUndoTurkish Cypriot actions in Varosha ‘a clear violation’ of UN resolutions, Nicosia saysUndoPensioner dies after crash on Paphos-Polis roadUndoby Taboolaby Taboola read more

realizing that a new government with a reasonable outlook is in power There is an old hand back at the helm of Irans petroleum industry and the westerners have got the message Right now not only are we in talks with numerous European firms but also three major oil companies from the United States have been in touch" Nematollahi said declining to name the American companies due to their request to remain unidentified at the present "There [are] nearly $90 billion of oil and petrochemical projects available for anyone who wants to participate Should the sanction problem be solved Irans Petroleum Ministry would welcome major European and American Oil Companies because they have higher technology and better management than Chinese or Indian firms" Nematollahi added At the moment Western firms India did get some needed help with two PCs. last month "So they toss back some Tylenols they chug orange juice and they hope that the cough or the virus goes away on its own" And earlier this week in Pennsylvania Clinton said Congress needs "to fix the Affordable Care Act" by keeping "what works about it but improve it get the costs down" President Obama himself the chief promoter of his law and its enthusiastic spokesman has spoken more critically of the law in recent months In an interview with New York magazine published on Sunday he said as much "In my mind the [Affordable Care Act] has been a huge success but its got real problems" he said Aides say Bill Clinton simply misspoke on a message the campaign has used all along insisting that the campaigns message has not changed Throughout the Democratic primary Hillary Clinton and Senator Bernie Sanders often clashed on health care policy with the Vermont Senator arguing for a single-payer system and Clinton advocating a more moderate approach that involved “building” on Obamacare and improving it Clinton and Democrats have praised the Affordable Care Act for providing health insurance to 20 million Americans allowing people under the age of 26 to get insurance through their parents and prohibiting insurers from denying coverage to people with pre-existing conditions Still the tone of some of the criticism among Democrats has grown increasingly critical in recent months Hillary Clinton has praised the act for widening coverage but has spoken more about taking steps to fix it At least half of the Senate Democrats who voted for the bill are no longer in Congress many of them voted out in the wake of the legislation New members who did not cast a vote for the law are quicker to address the problems with it And as it becomes more and more apparent that the law will need to be fixed Democrats openness to changes has become more apparent The most prominent and detailed plan is Hillary Clintons She has proposed several fixes that she says will reduce the cost of insurance and prescription drugs Clintons plan is intended to assist those who are not poor enough to qualify for government subsidies but not making enough money to comfortably pay for health insurance She would limit the amount that families have to pay on health insurance premiums for plans bought through the exchanges to 85% a measure aimed at helping those who do not qualify for subsidies She would create a public insurance option which would compete with private insurance plans and theoretically drive down the price of premiums And she would give tax credits of up to $5000 for families still struggling to pay out-of-pocket costs Clinton published an op-ed in the New England Journal of Medicine late last month defending the act but arguing it needs improvements "It strikes me as a move in the direction of affordability" said Larry Levitt a senior vice president at the Kaiser Foundation who has extensively studied the Affordable Care Act said of Clinton’s proposals Republicans meanwhile have called for Obamacare to be scrapped and replaced potentially with a plan that involves tax credits instead of subsidies Trump meantime has said he would encourage insurance plans be sold over state lines and eliminate the requirement that most Americans carry health insurance two moves that would dramatically undercut the law’s current features But Clinton’s plans to tweak the Affordable Care Act would require an acquiescent Congress A Republican House of Representatives is unlikely to support a public option and it is unclear what other pieces in her plan Clinton could pass without GOP support Some health care policy experts say she could be forced to settle with implementing the smaller-grade fixes like appointing more regulators to insure the insurance companies don’t monopolize markets and passing tax credits In a statement on Thursday Jason Miller the Trump campaign’s senior communications adviser said Hillary Clinton should answer for her husband’s remarks who has since repeated that he supports the law but thinks Congress needs to make improvements "Secretary Clinton do you agree with your husband that Obamacare is a crazy system that has a model that doesnt work" Miller said in a statement Clinton’s answer to that however is likely more complicated than Republicans might expect Contact us at editors@timecomEvery dysfunctional relationship proceeds though the same stages: from promise to problem to crisis and ultimately to repetitive farce There is one more embarrassing public scene one more fight that disturbs the neighborsa lather-rinse-repeat cycle that becomes more tiresome than anything else That final stage is where the hard right of the GOP has at last arrived in its tortured pas de deux with science The most recent Republican to get into an ugly dust-up with the scientific truth is Florida Gov Rick Scott Running for re-election against former Gov (and former Republican) Charlie Cristand currently trailing in pollsScott was asked by a reporter whether he believes climate change is real Depressingly but predictably he went for what is becoming the go-to dodge for too many in the GOP when pressed on a scientific fact that they dare not acknowledge for fear of fallout from the base but can no longer openly deny for fear of being called out for willful know-nothingism “I’m not a scientist” Scott thus beganand there he should have stopped The device of course is meant to suggest that the issue is just too complex just too abstruse for people without advanced degrees to presume to pass judgment on It was the bob-and-weave used by Fla Senator Marco Rubio when GQ magazine asked him the age of the Earth “I’m not a scientist man” he saidadding the “man” fillip because it presumably suggested a certain whew-this-stuff-is-hard fatigue It was used as well by House Speaker John Boehner when he was pressed about proposed EPA regulations intended to curb greenhouse gasses “Well listen” he began “I’m not qualified to debate the science over climate change” There’s something not just risibly dishonest about this reg’lar-folk pose it’s flat-out unseemly too which is why less disingenuous Republicans whatever their views tend to find a defter way to phrase things Boehner Scott Rubio and the like are seeking to have things two incompatible waysthey deny the science even ridicule the science and then they seek to hide behind the skirts of the science recusing themselves from answering questions because it’s all just too dang complicated Never mind that if you take them at their wordif you say okay let’s see what the eggheads in the labs say and it turns out that the eggheads in the labs all but universally agree that global warming is dangerously frighteningly realthey neatly flip the script The scientiststhe ones to whom they pretend to deferare suddenly dismissed as “grant-grubbing” hoaxsters conniving with liberal politicians to “expand the role of government” But okay let’s pretend the politicos are sincere If the Speaker by his own admission isn’t qualified to debate climate change fine he’s excused from the conversationand he should be expected not to offer further opinion on the matter This however is a dangerous game to play If being a scientist man is a threshold requirement for taking a thoughtful honest position on climate change then the same is true for being an economist or physician or astronomer if you presume to offer an opinion on the federal budget or the health care law or NASA funding The “both sides do it” faux equivalency game is hard to play on this one since science denial is simply not endemic in the Democratic party the way it is in the GOP But that hardly means all Dems have covered themselves in glory West Va Sen Joe Manchin literally shot a hole in a copy of the cap and trade bill in a 2010 election ad a crude symbolic twofer that signaled yes to guns and no to climate regulation in his rural coal-producing state Louisiana Sen Mary Landrieu locked in a tough reelection battle has consistently blocked climate action opposing tighter regulations on coal-fired power plants because she says “Requiring [the plants] to use technology that has not been proven viable in industrial settings is completely backward” a good argument if what she says about the technology were remotely accuratewhich it isn’t But the hard truth is Manchin and Landrieu are outliers among the Democrats while the counterfactual voices are among the loudest within Republican ranks The time really has come for the GOP to fix its relationship with scienceor just break up for good Either way they should do something soon because the rest of us are getting sick of the fighting Write to Jeffrey Kluger at jeffrey_kluger@timemagazinecom which he later had to revise. ” Kucharski said.
