SDG&E offers bill credit to electric vehicle drivers March 6, 2019 Categories: Local San Diego News FacebookTwitter KUSI Newsroom, KUSI Newsroom SAN DIEGO (KUSI) – San Diego Gas & Electric announced today that ratepayers will once again have the opportunity to reduce their monthly bill by driving an electric vehicle.SDG&E has made the promotion available to electric vehicle drivers for the last two years in an effort to combat the effects of climate change and reduce the county’s collective carbon footprint. The county’s roughly 35,000 plug-in electric vehicle drivers can apply for the credit, administered by the California Air Resources Board, though May 31.Last year’s Electric Vehicle Climate Credit was $500 for each of the roughly 15,000 residents who applied. In 2017, about 7,000 residents received credits of roughly $200 each.SDG&E also offers time-of-use charging plans for electric vehicles when residents pay a monthly service fee of $16. Drivers can charge their car from midnight to 6 a.m. on weekdays and midnight to 2 p.m. on weekends and holidays for 9 cents per kilowatt hour, which is equivalent to paying 75 cents per gallon of gas.“In addition to the environmental benefits, the performance of electric vehicles and the savings that come from fueling a car with electricity versus gasoline are driving a growing number of people to make the switch to plug-in electric vehicles,” said Mike Schneider, SDG&E’s vice president of clean transportation and asset management.Residents who drive electric vehicles can apply for the credit at sdge.com/evcc by using their SDG&E account number, their car’s Vehicle Identification Number and a digital copy of their DMV registration. The size of the credit will depend on how many drivers apply and the amount of revenue the state generates from low carbon fuel credit sales.SDG&E will apply the credits beginning in June. Katlyn’s bullying began in fifth grade. To this day, 17-year-old Katlyn (pronounced cat-lynn) can hear her tormenter’s words.Katlyn, fat-lyn, two-by-four, can’t fit through the kitchen door.“I got called ‘fat-lyn’ every day in fifth grade,” said Katlyn, who asked that her last name not be used.By sixth grade, bullies began targeting Katlyn on the Internet. Girls would comment on her MySpace photos, calling her ugly. They’d send her messages calling her names.o What: Teen suicide prevention forum.o When: 6 p.m. March 6.o Where: Vancouver Clinic in Battle Ground, 2005 W. Main St.o Information: Forum is open to kids 18 and younger. Pizza and door prizes provided. She switched schools, only to find new bullies. This time, they targeted her for being attracted to boys and girls.By eighth grade, Katlyn turned her pain into self-mutilation. She cut herself to relieve stress.“It built up and it got to be too much, and I tried to kill myself,” she said.Katlyn’s mother found her and got her help. Katlyn was diagnosed with depression and started taking natural antidepressants and seeing a counselor.Today, she’s moving forward. Katlyn is on track to graduate from Union High School — her fifth school in three years — a year early. She’s been accepted to two colleges. She’s happier.Katlyn shared her story with a group of nearly 50 teenagers during a suicide prevention forum Wednesday evening at The Vancouver Clinic in Battle Ground. A couple dozen adults listened to Katlyn’s testimony, several wipingaway tears as she spoke.Nurse practitioner Beth Walton organized the series of three forums; the final forum is March 6. The teens do a majority of the speaking and share information about local resources.Walton’s own daughter, 16-year-old Meredith Thompson, told the teens about her struggles. For Meredith, the bullying started in middle school.“Being a girl, we all know how mean and vicious we can be,” she said.In high school, the bullying got worse. Someone created a Facebook page to spread lies about Meredith.“I couldn’t go a day without someone saying something or wanting to fight me,” she said.Walton noticed her daughter wasn’t her normal, bubbly self and sat Meredith down for a talk. Meredith revealed everything. She saw a doctor, who diagnosed Meredith with depression. Now, at Summit View High School, the sophomore is receiving straight As and doing well.Meredith and Katlyn shared a similar message with their peers.“You can be so down, but it does come back up,” Meredith said.“It gets better,” Katlyn said. “I can be the one to say, ‘It got better.’”MARISSA HARSHMAN: email@example.com or 360-735-4546.RELATED VIDEO: read more

Andrew Gebhart/CNET I initially walked right past one of the flashy games at Google I/O — the search giant’s annual developer conference. I saw people frantically meowing into a microphone and somehow causing toy cars to race around a miniature farm. I later learned that while the game was indeed gimmicky, the tech powering it was an incredibly cool way of potentially training Google Assistant to help people with disabilities.I was exploring a tent full of experimental tech in the conference’s so called “sandbox.” As I was told, the tech was often developed in conjunction with interested third parties, not necessarily for wide release, but to solve a very specific problem for one or two people. Nevertheless, some of the tech will roll out widely soon, and several demos developed for a specific problem could potentially help many. Here are the three coolest projects I saw in Google’s experimental tech tent at I/O.The horse goes mooDumb game. Cool tech. Andrew Gebhart/CNET This was the experiment powering the farm game, and it’s called the Teachable Machine. First rolled out in 2017 as an easy to way understand machine learning, it’s a simple browser application you can use to teach a machine specific cues. I saw a demo in which I held still for a camera, then waved. The machine could then distinguish when I was waving and use that motion to trigger a Google Assistant action, like activating a smart bulb. Recent updates to the machine were developed alongside a man named Steve Saling, who suffers from ALS and struggles to move. With it, he can blink his eyes and turn on the lights or turn off the TV when he raises his lower lip. Once the update rolls out later this year, the machine can be trained to recognize any kind of gesture or video input, as well as any kind of sound input. In the game, participants were shown various animals and asked to do their best rendition of the associated animal sounds. After they trained the machine in their own version of a cat’s meow, they were shown the animals again, to see how close they could get to their own created sound models. When they matched, the car moved on the track and they raced the person next to them.As the attendant told me, the sound models aren’t based on anything, so when participants saw a cat, they didn’t actually have to meow to win. Few contestants realized this, but they stood a better chance if they just trained the machine with any noise they could easily replicate. They could make the cat oink. While I liked that fun twist to the game, the implications for people with disabilities is potentially profound. The Teachable Machine is part of Google’s expanded push for accessible tech at I/O, and you could use it to potentially get Google Assistant to respond to you through any cue you’re comfortable giving.Read a bedtime story to your kids when you’re not at homeMy Storytime is much simpler than the Teachable Machine. Basically it’s a program for a web browser that allows you to record stories — but Google has added a few smart extras to the application. Developed with an instruments company in Portland, it could be a huge help to parents that travel a lot but want to be a part of the bedtime routine with little ones at home. To use My Storytime, you’ll record yourself reading a story — it can be whatever story your child likes to hear or one of your creation. You can separate the story into chapters and add your own intro. Add a name to your recording, then your child can simply ask the Google Home smart speaker at home to play it. When you first set it up, the program will guide you through a few introductory prompts. These will allow the smart speaker to ask your child, in your voice, if they are ready and let Google handle the response. Share Creative CommonsICBC is the first Chinese bank to open in Houston.Houston is the fifth city for the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China after New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle, and it comes nine years after the state-owned bank expanded to the United States. So what took so long for it to come to Houston?Anthea Zhang, professor at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business, said one reason is that the Chinese governments owns it.“They go overseas only when the government waves the flag and says, hey, it’s time for you to move on, to go out to invest in foreign countries,” she said. “So it’s not exactly business decisions only.”Another reason, she said, is that Houston is not on the East or West Coast and not on many Chinese people’s radar. But Zhang said the fact that the bank is opening here shows that this might be changing.“It means more investments, it means there are more business opportunities,” she said. “And also now they have, like, it’s just greater visibility of Houston in China.” Zhang expects the main focus for the ICBC to be the oil and gas industry. The Associated Press reports:Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Wednesday entered a heated national debate on racial disparities in school discipline, meeting with educators as a government watchdog said in a report that African-American students continue to be punished more often than their peers. The study by the Government Accountability Office found that black children account for about 16 percent of students but 39 percent of students suspended from school. A 2016 federal study showed that black students are more than three times more likely to be suspended from school and nearly twice as likely to be expelled than their white peers.A 2014 document issued by the Obama administration told schools to determine if penalties like suspension and expulsion were disproportionately affecting black students. If they didn’t correct any disparities, they could face federal investigations and possible loss of federal funding. The document also urged educators to move away from harsh penalties in favor of positive behavior interventions such as counseling.DeVos met behind closed doors Wednesday morning with educators who believe that rolling back the Obama rule will further entrench discrimination. Later in the day she heard from opponents who say that softening discipline practices makes schools less safe and prevents effective learning. While there’s widespread agreement that disparities in discipline based on race and disability are a serious problem, there’s intense debate over what causes them and how to fix them.Tynisha Jointer, behavioral health specialist for elementary schools in Chicago, said the Obama-era guidance was instrumental in fighting discrimination. She recalled a visit to a public school to help counsel an unruly first-grader. Jointer observed the student, a black boy, acting out during a PE class. But she also noticed that during the first 10 minutes of class, the teacher redirected that student six times, while his white peers who also were misbehaving did not receive the same attention.“Black students, especially black boys, are looked at as deviant and defiant while white students are seen as exploring and testing boundaries,” Jointer said in an interview. She said she told DeVos that “hands down, positive interventions work best.”Olinka Crusoe, who teaches English as a second language in New York City, cited the example of a first-grader at her school who would act out during writing time. She and other teachers spent several months trying various approaches until they figured out that giving him a sheet of paper with bigger lines and a bigger pencil solved the problem.“We tried intervention after intervention after intervention until the student was able to do the work, to just sit and learn,” Crusoe said before her meeting with DeVos.But Nicole Stewart said she resigned as vice principal at Lincoln High School in San Diego because she believes the Obama policy made her school and others dangerous for students and teachers. Stewart said one student brought a knife to school, but was not expelled because his action was attributed to his disability. Two weeks later, he attacked a student with a knife in front of their peers, she said.“Imagine that culture, imagine being a student on that campus, imagine being a teacher and wondering if you are safe, whether they have a gun,” Stewart told reporters in a phone call.Max Eden, an education expert at the Manhattan Institute, said when school officials fear repercussions from Washington they refrain from disciplining unruly students and that causes disruption in classrooms.“I’m not inside because I don’t want her(Betsy DeVos) to have a photo op with me” – DISD trustee Joyce Foreman @NBCDFW: https://t.co/jM7xWcbXZx pic.twitter.com/uomRQtCjRC— Jack Highberger (@JackHighberger) April 5, 2018“The message is that when the federal government says ‘you better get these numbers down,’ they are going to go down and the easiest way to do that is to not punish bad behavior or hide it when you do,” Eden said after the meeting.Eden said DeVos did not ask questions or make comments and merely listened.DeVos’ moves on school discipline follow other decisions on students’ civil rights last year. She rescinded guidance telling schools to allow transgender students to use the bathroom of their choice. She also allowed universities to ask for more evidence from women complaining of sexual assault on campus. DeVos said bathroom rules should be decided at the local level and that the Obama practice of investigating sexual assault was unfair to the accused.Education Department officials would not say when any decision could be made on any changes in the 2014 school discipline guidelines. DOI: 10.1126/science.aan5980 As most everyone knows, conventional air conditioners are bulky, heavy, use a lot of electricity and often leak greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. Thus, conditions are ripe for something new. Some new devices have been developed such as thermoelectric coolers, which make use of ceramics, but they are not efficient enough to play a major role in cooling. A more recent development is the use of devices exploiting the electrocaloric effect, which is where heat moves through certain materials when an electric current is applied. In this new effort, the researchers used a polymer as the material. The new cooling device was made by layering a polymer between a heat sink and a heat source. Applying electric current to the polymer when it was touching the heat sink caused its molecules to line up, which reduced entropy, forcing heat into the sink. The polymer was then moved into contact with the heat source while the current was turned off. The molecules relaxed, which caused the temperature to drop. Repeating this process resulted in cooling. The researchers report that the device is extremely efficient, portable and configurable. They suggest the same technology could be used to create coolers for a chair or hat, for example, or perhaps to chill smartphone batteries. They proved this last claim by actually building such a device and using it to cool down a battery heated by ordinary use—after only five seconds, the temperature of the battery had lessened by 8° C. Comparatively, air cooling the battery reduced its temperature just 3° C in 50 seconds. (Phys.org)—A team of researchers with the University of California and SRI International has developed a new type of cooling device that is both portable and efficient. In their paper published in the journal Science, the team describes their new device and possible applications for its use. Q.M. Zhang and Tian Zhang with the Pennsylvania State University offer some background on electrocaloric theory and outline the work done by the team in California in a Perspectives piece in the same journal issue. We developed a cooling device with a high intrinsic thermodynamic efficiency using a flexible electrocaloric (EC) polymer film and an electrostatic actuation mechanism. Reversible electrostatic forces reduce parasitic power consumption and allow efficient heat transfer through good thermal contacts with the heat source or heat sink. The EC device produced a specific cooling power of 2.8 watts per gram and a COP of 13. The new cooling device is more efficient and compact than existing surface-conformable solid-state cooling technologies, opening a path to using the technology for a variety of practical applications. Costa Rica and Nicaragua are headed back to the International Court of Justice at The Hague to settle another border dispute following years of wrangling over maritime oil-drilling blocks. The Casa Presidencial and the Foreign Ministry released statements Monday afternoon announcing Costa Rica’s intent to file a compliant with the world court on Tuesday, Feb. 25 to establish maritime boundaries between the two countries in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean.Since 2010, Costa Rica and Nicaragua have been embroiled in protracted cases at The Hague over the disputed Isla Calero (also known as Isla Portillos) wetlands along their shared Caribbean border.President Laura Chinchilla said Monday afternoon that the latest case came in response to “aggressive attitudes and recurrent threats from the government of Nicaragua’s expansionist policy,” according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry. The president mentioned Nicaragua’s decision to increase its naval fleet in recent years as another reason to seek the world court’s intervention.Costa Rica also announced its concern over a proposed reform to the Nicaraguan Constitution that would redraw Nicaragua’s boundaries with other countries, including Costa Rica, based on a 2009 maritime border ruling with Colombia by the court. The statement from the Casa Presidencial on Monday claimed that the world court said its ruling would not effect the boundaries of countries outside the dispute.Chinchilla suggested that Nicaragua was aiming to capture fishing, oil and natural gas resources that could be in the disputed areas. Petroleum drilling rights have been at the heart of the maritime conflict. In 2002, Nicaragua published a map with oil drilling blocks that Costa Rica contested. Negotiations over the boundaries continued until 2005 when Nicaragua suspended the talks. In July 2013, Costa Rica again balked at a Nicaraguan map published as part of a promotional packet for oil drilling concessions in the Pacific and Caribbean, insisting that dozens of the blocks presented passed into Costa Rican waters.Costa Rican Environment Minister René Castro signed a three-year oil drilling moratorium in 2011.The world court rejected Nicaragua’s claim in December 2013 that a road Costa Rica built along the Río San Juan, which serves as a border between the two countries, caused environmental damage. By Constantinos PsillidesTroika technocrats have green-lighted Cyprus’ National Health Scheme (NHS), according to a statement issued by the health ministry on Saturday. The Troika representatives met on Friday with Health Minister Philippos Patsalis as part of their fifth review of the implementation of Cyprus’ adjustment programme.According to the health ministry statement, the technocrats praised the government and the ministry for “making significant progress in all obligations described in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) during the last three months.”Patsalis expressed his satisfaction over the troika review, reiterating that the government’s goal was to reform the health system in Cyprus, “firstly for the benefit of the people.”“During the previous three months since the troika’s last visit to Cyprus, the ministry of health had shown significant progress in relation to the obligations arising through the Memorandum for the health sector,” the ministry said. The main steps, which were completed during this period include, among others the preparation and approval by the Cabinet of the Plan Reform, the preparation of a roadmap for the implementation of the Integrated Health Information System and the establishment of two groups for the implementation of the reforms. There was also progress in relation to the legal vetting of issues related to the reform and the public dialogue with the various stakeholders in the national health system.“We recognise that the implementation of the NHS and the reform of the whole system is a complex and difficult work,” said the ministry, adding that they would continue to make every effort to succeed. The Troika’s stellar review was largely expected after Patsalis managed to reach an understanding with the state doctors regarding their disagreement over the proposed NHS.Both sides agreed to get together and discuss the state doctors’ demands, including job security for contract doctors, a lift on the promotions ban in public hospitals and a clear guideline on overtime pay. The deal with the state doctors to discuss the issues was struck only last week. You May LikeDr. Marty ProPower Plus Supplement3 Dangerous Foods People Feed Their Dogs (Without Realizing It)Dr. Marty ProPower Plus SupplementUndoUltimate Pet Nutrition Nutra Thrive SupplementAdd This One Thing To Your Dog’s Food To Help Them Be HealthierUltimate Pet Nutrition Nutra Thrive SupplementUndoAngels And EntrepreneursRobert Herjavec Announce Venture Could Make You RichAngels And EntrepreneursUndo Concern over falling tourism numbersUndoTurkish Cypriot actions in Varosha ‘a clear violation’ of UN resolutions, Nicosia saysUndoIsraeli rape suspects freed, woman who alleged assault arrested (Updated)Undoby Taboolaby Taboola read more
