Dr. Alan Melnick has an interesting way of coordinating his wardrobe. At a press conference to talk about recent measles infections, Clark County’s public health officer wore a black pin-striped jacket, collared check-pattern shirt and a necktie with an apparently random artsy design.Columbian health reporter Marissa Harshman took a closer look at the tie, and realized those designs weren’t so randomly artsy after all.She described that moment in a posting on the “All Politics is Local” blog.“My college biology class told me the purple blobs and little Y-shaped thingies resembled a cell under a microscope. So, after the press conference, I told Melnick I liked his tie,” Harshman noted in the March 4 posting.Melnick replied: “It’s an immunization tie. Nobody else noticed.”Those Y-shaped thingies are antibodies, he said. The tie also features a little syringe (not shown in the photo) being inserted into a tiny vial of vaccine.Wearin’ o’ the germLater, Melnick said his antibody-vs.-antigen necktie isn’t the only germ-o-licious item in his wardrobe.“The tie I’m wearing today is based on the H1N1 swine flu virus,” Melnick said Thursday morning. The multicolored representation of the swine flu RNA, sold by Infectious Awareables, worked for a couple of reasons.First, Melnick was just getting ready to drive to Olympia to testify at a hearing on a bill about childhood immunizations. And, Thursday was St. Patrick’s Day— another good reason to wear that tie, the health officer said.“It has a little green in it.”Off Beat lets members of The Columbian news team step back from our newspaper beats to write the story behind the story, fill in the story or just tell a story. read more

The regional Native corporation for Southeast Alaska has a new CEO, a new board chairman and a new board member.Leaders of Juneau-headquartered Sealaska are following a direction set by their predecessors. But they promise some changes, following a recent board election.Download AudioShareholders elected Juneau businessman Ross Soboleff to an open seat.New Sealaska board member Ross Soboleff. (Courtesy 4 Shareholders for Sealaska)They also re-elected incumbents Rosita Worl, Sidney Edenshaw and Ed Thomas. A resolution limiting discretionary voting failed.Joseph Nelson was named by the board as chairman. He replaces Albert Kookesh, who remains on the panel but stepped down from the post. Results were announced at the end of the corporation’s annual meeting at the DoubleTree Hotel near the Seattle-Tacoma airport. About 6,000 of Sealaska’s 21,600 shareholders live in the Pacific Northwest.New board member Soboleff was part of an independent slate called 4 Shareholders for Sealaska. Fellow members Carlton Smith, Margaret Nelson and Karen Taug were not elected.Though he was the only one to win, Soboleff says the slate’s message was powerful.“Most of the board members I’ve spoken to know shareholders are interested in very positive changes in the company. They and me are in the leadership and we have to figure it out together,” he says. The slate, and most of the six other independent candidates, criticized the board for allowing corporate operations to run into the red by about $57 million last year.“I would say central to what we came forward with was a turnaround plan for the company,” Soboleff says. The slate’s Smith was enthusiastic about the results, even if he and two other members lost.“It’s a powerful victory for shareholders today and it’s a change that’s been wanting to be implemented,” Smith says. “What we’ve got is the beginnings of a brand new board.”He says the slate cast all its discretionary votes for Soboleff to make sure one member won.Sealaska’s new CEO, Anthony Mallott, also says the results are a turning point.“If today’s meeting isn’t proof of change, I don’t know what is,” he said in a press release. “We’ve heard from many people about what is expected of Sealaska, and the great news is that these are the things we’re already working on.”It’s unusual for Sealaska to have an open board seat. Retiring members usually resign before an election and the board appoints a replacement who then runs as an incumbent. This year, board member Byron Mallott announced he would not seek re-election so he could pursue his Democratic run for governor. But he completed his term rather than resigning. That guaranteed someone new would fill the seat.A resolution changing discretionary voting to weaken the board’s hold on ballot counts failed.Board candidate Mick Beasley, who authored the measure, says he’s frustrated, but would likely try again. He said he may also pursue a term-limits measure, as he has done before. He was not optimistic about the election’s results.“I see very little change,” he says.In all, 13 candidates ran for four board seats this year.Longtime incumbent Thomas was the top vote-getter, followed by incumbents Edenshaw and Worl. Challenger Soboleff won the fourth seat with the next-highest count. The board runner-ups, in order of votes received, were Beasley, Myrna Gardner, Ralph Wolfe, Smith, Nelson, Taug, Michelle McConkey, Will Micklin and Edward Sarabia Jr.The voting share counts are below. It was suggested during a recent meeting of HR officials of some companies and the Election Commission. According to the reports, the Election Commission is worried that people may avoid the elections as it is a long weekend. The voting in Karnataka will be held in two phases on April 18 and April 23.This move is to try and encourage employees to vote, The Times of India reported. It could be considered a long weekend as the poll dates come near Mahavir Jayanti (April 17) and Good Friday (April 19).The report said that the decision for the pay cut is left to the companies and the Election Commission has no say in the matter. In Karnataka, Lok Sabha constituencies which will go to polls on April 18 are Bengaluru North, Bengaluru South, Bengaluru Central, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga, Mandya, Mysuru-Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Tumakuru, Chikkaballapur, Bengaluru Rural, Udupi-Chikkamagaluru, and Kolar.AV Surya Sen, the Joint Chief Electoral Officer, said that the vote-and-seek-pay idea came from HR representatives of the manufacturing and technology sectors. un logoA campaign to raise $10 billion to ensure that every child gets a secondary school education by 2030 received support Friday from the UN chief, global and regional banks, and 11.5 million young people who are calling for the biggest education investment in history.Youth activists delivered a petition to secretary general Antonio Guterres with 1.5 million signatures from Pakistan and Bangladesh, adding to the 10 million signatures already collected from around the world. It calls on world leaders to launch a new International Finance Facility for Education that can provide an additional $10 billion to help send millions of marginalized boys and girls to school.UN education special envoy Gordon Brown said over 260 million children are not attending school on Saturday, and if current trends continue 400 million won’t be educated beyond age 11 by 2030, the target to meet the UN goal of ensuring a primary and secondary education for all children.“In total 800 million children – that is half the world’s children – will leave school without qualifications and fail to enjoy a quality education” and in some cases they will be illiterate, Brown told a news conference. He said this emphasizes that “the biggest divide in the world today is between the half of our future who are going to be educated and the other half who are being left behind – and the left behind include 75 million children, including 10 million refugees in conflict zones and other emergencies.”According to the International Commission on Financing Global Education Opportunity, international funding for education declined from 13 per cent of all aid 10 years ago to 10 per cent today. And all aid to education in developing countries amounts to $10 per child, “not enough to pay for a second-hand textbook, let alone a quality education,” said the commission, which was established in 2015 to increase investment in education. On Friday, the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank, African Development Bank, Asian Development Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development issued a joint statement committing to move forward on the $10 billion financing facility and their representatives joined Brown and the secretary-general.Guterres, a former UN refugee chief, said the amount of funding for schools for refugee children “I believe is extremely reduced” and not enough money goes to countries engulfed in conflict or facing emergencies.“If we look at the future, 1 billion young people will enter the labour market in the next decade,” the secretary-general said, and they need education to prepare them for a future that with technology “is changing very rapidly – so the investment in education is absolutely crucial.”“Now, the international finance facility comes to fill the gap … and my strong appeal is for the international community to fully bet in this new instrument,” Guterres said. read more

As research and development continues to reveal the benefits of medical imaging in healthcare, vendors are steadily improving imaging scanners for added efficiency and workflow. Because advanced visualization technologies are a part of the larger medical imaging discussion, these products are also evolving and growing in response to innovation within medical imaging. Market LeadersGE Healthcare, Siemens Healthcare, Vital Images, TeraRecon and Philips Healthcare continue to lead the advanced visualization market. In KLAS’ recent research report, “Advanced Visualization 2013: How Advanced Is It?” Philips led in overall performance with a score of 86.2. GE, TeraRecon, Vital Images and Siemens followed with scores of 84.5, 83.3, 82.5 and 79.4, respectively.1According to the report, however, providers are still looking for more complete advanced visualization systems with added functionality in the top three critical areas — cardiac, vascular and neuro imaging. None of the top vendors are listed as the leader in functionality in all three areas — a need that is currently preventing advanced visualization software from being used as a primary reading environment. “Two-thirds of providers said they would consider using the advanced visualization software for their primary reading environment, but only if and when complete functionality is offered,” the report stated.1Recent Software ReleasesSmaller vendors have tried to address this need, introducing various applications within the past year. At the 2014 Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) conference in February, Penrad released its Visualize:Vascular software, which generates 3-D images of the carotid artery lumen from slides created by conventional 2-D ultrasound. Additionally, Aycan and Chimaera GmbH received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 501(k) clearance for the Chimaera FusionSync software, which the company said allows for more efficient handling and diagnosis of multi-modal and follow-up medical data. The software supports 3-D computed tomography (CT), C-arm CT, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET) and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) data. EOS Imaging also gained CE mark this year for its hipEOS — a 3-D hip arthroplasty planning software that uses the company’s biplanar 3-D imaging. In April, Shina Systems also announced the new commercial release of its 3Di picture archive and communications system (PACS). According to the company, the system allows clinicians and patients to view medical images anywhere. Global ExpansionAdvanced visualization vendors are also expanding to markets outside of the United States. In addition to collaborating with Imperial College London to bring High Definition Volume Rendering (HDVR) to minimally invasive robotic surgery, Fovia Medical Inc. is also collaborating with Visua Medica to develop high-quality, accessible and affordable advanced visualization products to meet Latin America’s numerous medical imaging sub-markets.Blackford Analysis and ContextVision have also expanded their presence in international markets. At the 2014 Arab Health Conference in Dubai, Blackford Analysis introduced its software products to the Middle Eastern market. ContextVision expanded its presence in the Chinese market by adding an application specialist to its Beijing office in order to meet high demands in the region. New Applications for Healthcare As more advanced visualization techniques and applications are introduced, they are finding use in many different areas of medicine. Research presented at the annual meeting of the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) in March found that using 3-D MRI scans to precisely measure living and dying tumor tissue before and after chemoembolization — chemotherapy targeted directly at tumors — better predicts patient survival. “Our high-precision, 3-D images of tumors provide better information to patients about whether chemoembolization has started to kill their tumors so that physicians can make more well-informed treatment recommendations,” said Jean-Francois Geschwind, M.D., Johns Hopkins interventional radiologist and senior investigator on the studies. Engineers from the University of Washington (UW) created a new advanced imaging technology that allows scientists to see within small blood vessels to prevent injuries during cosmetic procedures. “Filler-induced tissue death can be a really devastating complication for the patient and provider,” said Shu-Hong (Holly) Chang, M.D., a UW assistant professor of ophthalmology specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery. “This noninvasive imaging technique provides far better detail than I’ve ever seen before and helped us figure out why this is happening.” The technology, called optical micro-angiography, works similarly to ultrasound and produces 3-D images of the body’s vascular network by shining a light on the tissue. 3-D imaging is also helping with personalized surgery in newborn and infant patients. 3D Systems’ Medical Modeling Virtual Surgical Planning (VSP) technology was used to aid in planning and conducting a lower jaw lengthening procedure on a young child in New York. VSP captures a digital model of the patient from an MRI or CT scan, and modeling experts work with physicians to create a surgical plan and print 3-D models and surgical guides. “VSP has not only helped make surgical procedures more precise, but offers the potential to change the scope of what is surgically possible,” said Oren Tepper, M.D., attending surgeon, Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Montefiore Medical Center, New York. itn Reference:1. GE claims it is the world’s first general purpose, ultra-high resolution single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT)/CT imaging system, with a new digital detector powered by cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) technology.SPECT/CT exams are performed to assess the functionality of organs and play a key role in the diagnosis and monitoring of a multitude of diseases. GE Healthcare’s new system is equipped with CZT technology that enables direct conversion of photons into a digital signal, therefore making the technology more efficient. Until now, CZT technology has been limited to organ-dedicated devices, whereas Discovery NM/CT 670 CZT is the first to allow doctors to perform exams on every organ, including whole-body exams. This technology is intended to help improve clinical efficacy and patient experience. Improved efficacy will allow doctors to detect smaller lesions and quantify them more accurately due to the increased spatial and contrast resolution. This may have a significant role in assessing and monitoring responses to therapies. Having the ability to complete multiple scans in a single visit and reduce the dose injected or the scan time by 50 percent will improve patient experience. Optimizing the duration of the exams or the injected dose represents not only an improvement for the patient experience, but also helps increase the operational and financial efficiency of hospitals.“We were able to do an in-field upgrade to the Discovery NM/CT 670 CZT, which was a faster and more efficient way to enable us to leverage the new CZT detector. We believe this new system will allow us to see improvements in lesion detectability and will increase the utility of SPECT/CT; we will also look to see how we can reduce scan time, lower dose or both, while maintaining image quality,” said Barry A. Siegel, M.D., professor of radiology and medicine, senior vice-chair and division director of nuclear medicine at Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University in St. Louis. “We look forward to doing research on SPECT/CT quantification, as accurate and reproducible quantification will be increasingly important in nuclear medicine.”Researchers have identified clinical scenarios where the combination of multiple SPECT tracers could aid physicians in diagnosing and giving much better and more specific reports in difficult patient conditions. However, performing such multi-isotope exams is quite challenging on conventional cameras. Multiple isotope exams could offer a greater insight into the diagnosis and monitoring responses to treatments. With the Discovery NM/CT 670 CZT, clinicians will be able to simultaneously visualize and analyze multiple physiological processes in a patient, gaining insights into multiple dimensions of the patient’s anatomy and physiology at the same time using the hybrid SPECT/CT.For more information: www.gehealthcare.com FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 News | Radiopharmaceuticals and Tracers | August 02, 2019 ASRT Supports Radiopharmaceutical Reimbursement Bill The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) announced its support for House Resolution (HR) 3772, a measure… read more Figure 1. Comments Share Associated PressSHELLENG, Nigeria (AP) – A hippopotamus that killed two fishermen in Nigeria’s northeast has been shot dead, authorities said Tuesday, highlighting how ill-equipped Nigerian wildlife control officials are to protect both wildlife and the communities that surround them.Local hunters killed the hippopotamus in the town of Shelleng on the bank of the Benue river last Sunday, said Babangida Jimeta, head of the hunters association of Adamawa State. He said they were on the lookout for two other hippopotamuses that had turned violent in a sanctuary of about 200 hippopotamuses on Kiri dam. “We don’t have pacifying weapons,” Jimeta said. “Only people at national parks and doctors have those.”“Even while killing the hippopotamus, we nearly died in the river,” he said. The chief of Shelleng town, Baba Ibrahim Italiya Shelleng, said the hippopotamus killed two fishermen last Saturday. He said other hippopotamuses had smashed canoes and destroyed rice fields in Shelleng and neighboring towns reliant on fishing and farming.State wildlife control officials, who gave permission for the hunters to hunt down the hippopotamus, said killing the animal was a last resort.“We don’t encourage killing,” said Zakari Buba Yaduma, assistant director of the wildlife control and conservation program at the state’s ministry of environment. “We went there to control, but this hippopotamus had already killed two people. We had no alternative.”The sanctuary has been there for decades, said Yaduma, but as the human communities around it grow, the conflicts are more frequent. Older hippopotamuses also are known to become temperamental. The ministry has done awareness campaigns, teaching people in river communities about hippopotamuses’ routines so that they can avoid them, Yaduma said. Think Tank analyzes the second round of Democratic debates Sponsored Stories Top Stories New high school in Mesa lets students pick career paths The difference between men and women when it comes to pain “When you dart an animal, it will just go unconscious so you can transport it,” Yaduma said. “But you still need a special place to take that animal to; we lack the weapons and the machinery.”Desmond Majekodunmi, council member of the Nigerian Conservation Foundation, says that people have every right to kill the hippopotamuses to protect themselves when they aren’t in reserves or national parks. However, Majekodunmi said that conservationists need to do more to keep both humans and wildlife safe.“Hippopotamuses are not on the endangered species list, but they are a threatened animal,” he said. “If hippos are alive there and they are not being protected in any official way, then there is a problem.”___Yinka Ibukun contributed to this report from Lagos, Nigeria.(Copyright 2012 The Associated Press.
